GDC Ganderbal organises awareness programme on World Literacy Day

The Department of Education and Sociology, Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal, organised an awareness programme to mark “World Literacy Day” on Tuesday in the College Conference Hall. The programme was organised with the objective of sensitising students about the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity, while highlighting its crucial role in building an educated, empowered and sustainable society. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Shaheena Akhter, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Education, who highlighted the significance of education in empowering individuals and bringing about positive social transformation. She stressed that education not only enhances knowledge and skills but also enables individuals to become responsible and active members of society. The keynote address was delivered by Principal GDC Ganderbal, Dr. Rafiq Ahmad, who highlighted the importance of learning and knowledge in human life. Referring to the first revelation of Allah to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he cited the word “Iqra”, meaning “to read”, emphasising the profound importance attached to knowledge and learning. Dr. Rafiq Ahmad also spoke about the challenges faced by individuals deprived of educational opportunities. He observed that illiteracy can limit a person's ability to access information, employment opportunities and essential services, thereby affecting individual dignity as well as social and economic development. As part of the programme, around 18 students delivered speeches highlighting different dimensions of literacy and its relevance in contemporary society. The students emphasised that literacy is not merely confined to the ability to read and write; rather, it equips individuals with the ability to understand information, make informed decisions, access opportunities and participate meaningfully in social and civic life. The speakers also underlined the need to create a culture that values lifelong learning. They encouraged students to contribute towards educational awareness and support initiatives aimed at extending the benefits of education to disadvantaged sections of society. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Soubiya Yousuf, who expressed gratitude to the Principal, faculty members, students and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the event.
